Overview

The TA Instruments R&D applications group provides globally recognized scientific leadership through specialty measurements in the field of materials sciences. We use that understanding to direct the development of innovative products and workflow-based solutions, enabling our customers to solve critical analytical challenges, advance scientific understanding, and improve product performance.
This group is responsible for providing expert scientific contributions that impact product development and business outcomes, positioning TA/Waters as the leading specialty measurement company. This includes providing leadership in developing new science, technologies, methods, practices, and ways of working, as well as generating and presenting scientific content using the TA/Waters product portfolio to support business activities and new product development.
 

Typical tasks of the position include, but are not limited to

Responsibilities

  • Provide practical and theoretical expertise and support as part of the product development team to support the innovation of instrumentation and accessories for the TA product portfolio.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of key developments, trends, and practices within the field of material sciences through literature searches, reviews, and attendance at conferences and events. 
  • Ability to act as the internal expert to support specific product development by conducting scientific research, literature searches, liaising with external consultants where required and gaining customer feedback. 
  • Test and evaluate new products (hardware and software) during and at the end of the development cycle. Use knowledge to experiment with modifications on existing products to improve performance, functionality, and other properties shown by the product.
  • Support new product development projects internal and external to TA.
  • Generate customer-facing technical documents to support the theory and operation of new products.
  • Represent the company at scientific conferences and exhibitions by presenting scientific papers and posters regarding new products and accessory development.
  • Obtain market feedback and opinions from internal and external customers on the viability of new product innovations and use this to support the development process.
  • Provide internal training to the application support team primarily regarding new product introductions, but should be prepared to participate in user, and customer training events. 
  • Act as an internal consultant to the application support team and sales group regarding more complex applications or customer queries. On occasion, I may be required to assist with customer demonstrations.
  • Builds relationships across the company and with customers; formulates strategy with engineering managers.
  • Formulate novel ideas for Intellectual Property (IP) and patent filings.
  • Proactively engages and collaborates with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
  • Identify, develop, and champion new ideas or fields of research. 
  • Routinely produces scientific content and marketing collateral and publishes peer-reviewed articles.

The successful candidate will have a combination of knowledge, skills, and experience that would include the following

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related studies with a Rheology or mechanical testing focus and experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant industrial experience is highly desired.
  • Previous work experience with equipment used for Rheology and Physical Testing of materials and a working knowledge of TA or competitive products.
  • Must demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of rheology and associated scientific principles.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to present technical papers at society meetings and national and international technical meetings.
  • Should be a member of or be prepared to join the Society of Rheology.
  • Familiarity with computational programs such as MATLAB, Python, R, (or similar) to evaluate and verify product performance.
